Generally, essentially the most fascinating pictures emerge solely once we resign ourselves to the opportunity of not discovering something in any respect. Maybe it’s in these moments that we’re really open to being shocked.

Such was the case final autumn after I set out with my digital camera on the outskirts of Stockholm. It was my first go to to this explicit location, and I discovered it uninspiring. The panorama didn’t catch my eye in any important means—it was neither strikingly lovely nor curiously bleak. The sunshine was harsh and unforgiving.

After a while spent wandering and brooding, digital camera in hand, I surrendered to my disappointment. I sat down on a rock and poured myself a cup of espresso from my thermos, discovering solace within the easy pleasure of a break in nature when pictures fails to ship.
