The timetable for this week’s prime ministerial appointment and Cupboard reshuffle

After two months, the Conservative leadership election is finally over. This afternoon we learn the result, after which the winner will have to hit the ground running in order to try and start tackling a truly monstrous in-tray. So what does the week look like?

Monday:

  • 12.30pm: The winner of the second round of the leadership contest is announced by Sir Graham Brady, following opening remarks by Andrew Stephenson, the party chairman.

Tuesday:

  • 8.30am: Boris Johnson makes his farewell address from Downing Street before embarking on a flight to Scotland to tender his resignation to the Queen later in the morning.
  • Early afternoon: Once he has departed Balmoral, his successor will arrive and kiss hands.
  • 2pm: The new prime minister flies back to London.
  • 4pm: They make their first address to the nation either from Downing Street or inside Number Ten, depending on the weather.

Wednesday:

  • Morning: First meeting of the new Cabinet.
  • 12pm: Winner faces Sir Keir Starmer in the first Prime Minister’s Questions of their leadership.

The Cabinet reshuffle will be taking place in the background of these events, with the winner starting to make appointments presumably as soon as they’re on the official plane back to London. The schedule will likely interrupt the usual theatre of the occasion, with appointees strolling up Downing Street and so on.
