Lower Ups is Bostonian Leah Callahan’s third album in 18 months, following 2021’s pairing Easy People and Quick Tales, following a break of 15 years.

The affect of David Bowie, and the artist’s lifelong fascination is obvious all through this album, not least within the title itself. The singer defined, “I’m getting huge inspiration from his work in what I’m calling my model of musical “fan fiction”, borrowing all the pieces from Bowie’s plastic soul rhythms (for the BPMs), to his obsession with the esoteric realm (Diabolique), and cut-up songwriting technique (Lower-Ups).”

To spherical all of it up she performs an adulatory tackle Bowie’s wonderful Look Again in Anger. There’s a density to the manufacturing of Lower Ups which provides it an occasional barely off-kilter, other-worldly really feel, but it’s heat and welcoming. It engulfs the listener, permitting the person to lose themselves in Callahan’s wealthy and sultry vocals. The album consists of 10 tracks, or maybe somewhat vignettes on a greater phrase, every lasting round 3 minutes, with tales of individuals and locations by way of her eyes.

Let’s Go Dance is the sequel to the monitor Social gathering on the earlier album, though this time eager to insurgent and keep out somewhat than invite the listener to her own residence; whereas Metropolis Lights hints at adventures of the artist’s youth. Different tracks, comparable to Cordelia look like Callahan her place in life, content material together with her decisions; while my favorite monitor, Hoi Polloi is a critique of those that have all of it however won’t ever be actually glad.

Though this isn’t probably the most ‘instantaneous’ of the trilogy of albums that has been launched during the last 18 months, I’d say after repeat listens it’s the most rewarding. Leah is a pure storyteller and is gaining confidence with every album.
