Latchmere Passage, Milton Corridor, Dentists & a Triangle

Latchmere Passage, Milton Corridor, Dentists & a Triangle concludes my stroll in Clapham on Saturday July twenty ninth 1989 which started with Some Insanity and Homes in Clapham and continued on Monday thirty first. The earlier half was Shaftesbury Park & Latchmere Highway.

The passage was most likely constructed round 1859-63 when the West London Extension Railway was constructed, disrupting a neighborhood route that hyperlinks what’s now Cabul Highway with Sheepcote Lane on the jap facet of Latchmere Highway.

The railway was an essential route crossing the Thames and the three strains that cross Latchmere Passage, every by itself viaduct and bridge, hyperlink it to the strains into Waterloo, to the north platforms of Clapham Junction serving strains out of Waterloo and people on the south facet for the strains out of Victoria. The latter two bridges are actually utilized by Overground and Thameslink trains.

Cabul Highway is a part of the property right here and to the west of Falcon Highway developed because the Falcon Park property by Alfred Heaver in 1879 – 1881, with road names taken from the battles of the Second Afghan Struggle (1878–80) and the 1879 Zulu Struggle. Virtually the entire space was lined with small two-storey terraced homes, aside from this 1885 Milton Congregational Corridor, designed by Searle & Hayes in a restrained Queen Anne fashion.

Congregationalists had worshipped at Milton Corridor, Battersea since 1873, presumably in some earlier constructing and after its congregation mixed with Battersea Congregational Church within the Thirties had varied makes use of together with as a movie studio. It was lately redeveloped, retaining the facade, as residential properties.

A big a part of the world was broken by wartime bombing and after the conflict transformed to open and reasonably featureless inexperienced areas, Shillington Gardens and Falcon Park.

That is one among three semi-deatched pairs of homes on Falcon Highway which date from round 1850 when the world started to be developed by William Willmer Pocock, an architect and distinguished Methodist and Thomas Daniel Carter who owned a lot of the land. Carter had bought a few of the land to Pocock as containing brick earth, and Pocock arrange the Falcon Brick Works right here. However the bricks weren’t too good and the world quickly started to be constructed over.

Subsequent door to the dentists was Grove Finish Home, additionally constructed round 1850 and now reasonably altered because the Battersea Mosque.

I realised then that I had missed out the Poyntz Highway triangle, a small triangle of roads between the railway strains to the east of Latchmere Highway, and I retraced my steps to Latchmere Highway, then crossed over into Knowsley Highway.

The image reveals the tip of the highway simply past its junction with Shellwood Highway. The homes right here have been constructed within the 1870s and appear little modified now. The archway led by way of to a yard with buildings round it, I believe workshops, although there may be now a more moderen block of flats. The Overground from Clapham Junction to Wandsworth Highway runs on an embankment to the fitting of the homes right here.

I took a few footage on Latchmere Highway, not on-line, and continued north up Battersea Bridge Highway, the place I made this image of a doorway with a reasonably flimsy-looking railing and what seems to be a reasonably subtantial tree. The home and doorway are nonetheless there and in reasonably higher situation however there isn’t any signal of the the tree and its onerous to see the place it may have been rising.

By now I used to be searching for a bus cease to take me again to Clapham Junction, just some yards additional up the road. This was the tip of my stroll in July 1989 although I returned to Battersea a number of days later.
