Future Shock: GENER8ION


Romain Gavras and Surkin give a singular perception into their collaborative mission and audiovisual triptych, Neo Surf.

GENER8ION is the multidisciplinary collaborative mission of French filmmaker Romain Gavras – the director behind hanging movies for Jamie xx, M.I.A. and Justice in addition to the movies Our Day Will Come and The World Is Yours – and digital producer and composer Benoît Heitz, aka Surkin.

Neo Surf is the primary instalment in GENER8ION’s story of the longer term with a lowercase ‘f’, a future that comprises moments that uncannily appear like the current: an AI scanner capturing feelings, a fly-over alliance posing with a spaceship, teenagers having fun with flying surfboards – a seemingly ‘regular’ atmosphere, underpinned by a menace of gradual violence, identical to the one we’re experiencing proper now.

Offered as a triptych, Neo Surf is at present put in at Truth and 180 Studios’ new exhibition Future Shock, providing a uniquely optimistic view of the longer term regardless of a way of slowly unfolding disaster. “It’s nearly extra controversial to see a constructive aspect, that even when the world is collapsing, youngsters can be youngsters and do silly shit,” Gavras says.

On this movie, we go behind the scenes of Neo Surf with the duo, who supply a singular perception into its influences, setting and opaque which means. “I simply assume it’s essential to make folks really feel one thing,” Gavras says, “whether or not it’s good, unhealthy or unsettling.”
