Extra Across the Meridian – 1995 Color – Half 3

Extra across the Meridian – It’s seldom attainable to truly stroll for quite a lot of yards really on the Greenwich Meridian in London and whereas planning my Meridian Stroll I usually wandered round significantly, having to make detours and in addition in search of the extra attention-grabbing routes. So not all these photographs are precisely on the Meridian, however most had been taken inside a brief distance from it.

Greenway, Abbey Lane, Abbey Rd, Stratford, Newham, 1995, 95p4-1151

Once I started this mission the Meridian was not marked on the Ordnance Survey or Avenue maps, and one among might first duties was to get a ruler and pencil it on to them. In 1999 it was added to the OS maps of the realm, however doesn’t appear to be on the most recent variations. In 1995 there have been no sensible telephones with on-line maps and GPS which might have made issues a lot simpler.

The Greenway was the just lately rebranded path above the Northern Outfall Sewer which rans throughout East London from Hackney Wick to the sewage remedy plant at Beckton, going beneath the street right here shut the the bridge over Abbey Creek on the Channelsea River, the place Abbey Lane turns into Abbey Highway. You may see the bridge on the left of the image.

The Greenway is a superb traffic-free cycle route for pedestrians and cyclists, operating straight and degree and this image provides some proof of that.

I’m unsure what this pipe was for, maybe for taking fuel throughout the river. Not far-off on the opposite aspect of this tidal creek was one of many largest fuel works in London – and you’ll nonetheless see its listed gasholders, although the view is prone to change quickly with the location being redeveloped.

However behind me once I made this image was the Abbey Mills sewage pumping station and on the sting of the creek under had been the storm outfalls the place sewage could be launched after heavy rains. With the altering tides it will move downstream a little bit after which might be taken miles upriver alongside the Prescott channel and the River Lea.

Flats, East India Dock Rd, South Bromley, Tower Hamlets, 1995, 95p4-1321

I believe the Meridian went via the centre of the taller fuel holder at Poplar Gasoline works.

My pencilled line for the Meridian exhibits it going via each the water within the dock and the brick constructing at left which was the previous Blackwall Energy Station in each of those photos.

South of the East India Docks the road crosses the River Thames above and between the 2 bores of the Blackwall Tunnel, nearer to the unique western tunnel now utilized by northbound site visitors. I couldn’t take pictures within the tunnel – although it was attainable for these on foot to take a bus throughout, however these would have been quite boring in any case.

This image exhibits the southern entrance to the tunnel with its 1897 Grade II listed gatehouse by the London County Council’s Superintending Architect Thomas Blashill. In entrance of it a much less ornate pink and white striped arch with heigh and weight restriction indicators and hangers to hit any overtall autos and hopefully stop harm to the gatehouse.

One image not I believe really on the Meridian however not removed from it, taken from the lengthy footbridge over the Blackwall Tunnel Southern Method.

My path continued south alongside the riverside path, with the Meridian going into the River Thames on the acute left of this image.

I saved to the land persevering with alongside a path I’ve walked many instances and making just a few extra photos.

Like a lot of London’s riverside nearly all the trade has now gone, however some relics stay, although most of this a part of my route is now lined by quite boring flats.

I rejoined the Meridian the place it made landfall in Greenwich – the place I made a number of the photos on the finish of my earlier submit.

Extra color work from 1995 together with some extra panoramas in a later submit.
