In Reward of Uninteresting Locations

“Nothing of curiosity on this space.” My father wrote these phrases on a topographic map greater than fifty years in the past. Once I got here throughout the map just lately, his phrases made me chuckle out loud as a result of they had been written virtually straight on high of the place that I now name residence. And I moved right here exactly as a result of I discovered the place so fascinating!

Unfavorable feedback had been uncommon for my father. He was a glass-half-full individual, all the time seeing a sliver of blue sky when the remainder of us had been grumbling in regards to the rain. His topographic maps had been sprinkled with annotations like “wonderful seashore,” “picturesque village,” “beautiful picnic web site on river” and “seems promising for trout.” So his verdict, “Nothing of curiosity,” was a placing anomaly.

Alas, my father died a decade in the past, so I can’t ask him for a proof. I can solely speculate that he drove by this space briefly in dreary climate (not unusual right here), maybe with squabbling youngsters and a stressed Labrador retriever within the again seat (a standard household outing). Even so, his remark is shocking as a result of that is the form of wild coastal surroundings that often appealed to him – and impressed his images – because it continues to encourage me and my images right now.

The exact location isn’t vital. It occurs to be the Tor Bay coast of Guysborough County in Nova Scotia, Canada. However it may simply have been some other place. The purpose is that my father noticed nothing of curiosity and made no images right here, whereas I’ve been tramping fortunately about this panorama with my digicam for a number of years and haven’t discovered it tedious but.
