The venerable post-punk band fronted by Louder Than Battle’s boss John Robb will take over O2 Shepherds Bush Empire on Saturday.
Fashioned by John Robb and Mark Tilton in 1977, the band has propagated DIY and punk ethics, being an inspiration for American noiseniks Massive Black and Sonic Youth. By 1987 the band had achieved cult standing within the UK and overseas, NME referred to as them the “godfathers of British spikipunk”, whereas Melody Maker’s Everett True described their efficiency at Boston Arms in 1988 as “compelling, as adrenalin-driven, as difficult, as attempting as ever”. At that present thirty-six years in the past, The Membranes shared the stage with My Bloody Valentine. The upcoming London present will mark the anniversary of that implausible efficiency.
