Job description

The NASA Geostationary Carbon Cycle Observatory (GeoCarb) will file high-resolution, near- infrared spectra of mirrored daylight from geostationary orbit above North and South America, aboard a business communications satellite tv for pc. These knowledge can be analyzed to retrieve spatially- resolved estimates of the atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide, methane and carbon monoxide in addition to photo voltaic induced chlorophyll fluorescence from crops on land. The mission will launch in 2024 and collect knowledge for no less than 3 years (http://www.ou.edu/geocarb).

The College of Oklahoma (OU) and the NASA Goddard House Flight Middle co-lead the GeoCarb mission throughout its improvement section. The instrument is being constructed and examined at Lockheed Martin Superior Expertise Middle in Palo Alto, California. The science algorithms and floor knowledge processing system are being developed at Colorado State College in Fort Collins, Colorado. OU is chargeable for GeoCarb mission administration after launch, and as such, we’re looking for to construct the capability wanted for a profitable mission, together with venture administration, instrument science and operations.

We search as much as 3 teamwork-oriented people who will carry out GeoCarb instrument operations and analyze and troubleshoot mission efficiency. This may contain coaching over the subsequent 12 months with Lockheed Martin (onsite and remotely) and working the instrument through the mission. These people will:

  • Develop and implement plans, merchandise, and procedures to allow the OU workforce to function the instrument after launch;
  • Monitor instrument efficiency throughout mission operations and consider each the speedy well being and security of the flight unit from knowledge accessible and long-term developments for rising or hidden issues;
  • Reply to instrument and floor system anomalies as the primary line of protection and begin investigations into trigger and restoration;
  • Develop and current concepts and standing to stakeholders, reminiscent of NASA, throughout conferences and opinions;
  • Help the venture scientist to make sure that the instrument efficiency meets the mission wants.

These people will prepare with the instrument workforce (each onsite in Palo Alto, California, USA and remotely) and help instrument readiness for flight. This may embody:

  • Help of the event and testing efforts of the Lockheed Martin instrument workforce with the intention to be taught each the instrument and floor system operations;
  • Help of pre-flight calibration actions;
  • Help of the verification, by way of check or evaluation, of instrument efficiency and data necessities;
  • Common prolonged journey for onsite help.

Desired data:

  1. Basic data of floor system and instrument/payload commanding and telemetry ideas
  2. Basic data of instrument floor knowledge processing and knowledge evaluation
  3. Conversant in spacecraft/instrument operation idea to have the ability to develop instrument operational plan and course of
  4. Expertise with scripting and/or programming
  5. Expertise with instrument operation
  6. System engineering expertise is a plus
  7. Familiarity with NASA/NOAA spaceflight missions or lifecycle is a plus

Attributes:

  1. Have to be a self-starter and in a position to establish duties from the general want
  2. In a position to work beneath tight deadlines and on-the-fly to react to setting

The place will contain common prolonged journey to work with the instrument workforce on website in Palo Alto, California, USA through the first 1-2 years after rent.

The profitable candidate will possess a minimal of a Bachelor’s diploma in physics, engineering, atmospheric science or a associated area with robust expertise in software program coding for knowledge evaluation, spectroscopy, and instrumentation. The popular candidate will possess a Grasp’s diploma in an acceptable area and expertise working with optical distant sensing devices, together with process improvement and calibration/validation.

To use, please submit a CV/resume and the names of three individuals that may function references (with contact data) to Dr. Sean Crowell (scrowell@ou.edu). Assessment of purposes will start instantly and proceed till the place is stuffed.
